Baked Bean Soup

07 Nov

Last night I was able to go see the new movie titled Secretariat. I enjoyed this movie immensely. It got me thinking about my Grandmother, even though the movie is set in the late 1960’2 early 1970’s, the lead woman in the movie named Penny used a green depression wear  cup in the barn for her coffee. I remember both of my grandmothers having these cups in their kitchens.

Today I will share a simple depression era recipe that my grandmother would make for my mother and her siblings. Then my mother  made for me and my siblings, that I now make for my children.

  • 1 28 oz can of baked beans
  • 1 half can of milk (use empty bean can)
  • 1 – 1 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

Place all in a heavy saucepan and heat slowly, stirring often, until just hot.

Serve topped with chopped chives and a slice of cheese bread or corn bread.

I know this recipe sounds strange at first but I assure you, someone in your home will love it, if not everyone.

I miss my grandparents every day and I wish I could hear their voice for strength. But, each day that I am in my kitchen I am keeping their memory alive by keeping my family fed.
