Whole-Wheat Chocolate Cake

Today is a birthday day here at our house. I am really into using whole wheat flour where ever I can in place of white flour for healthier baking. So, today I’m making a whole-wheat chocolate cake for my darling. This recipe replaces a small amount of regular flour with whole wheat flour but in my educated opinion any bit you can do for health is worth it!

Whole-Wheat Chocolate Cake

  • 1 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 cup Flour Unbleached, Sifted
  • 3/4 cup Whole Wheat Flour Stirred
  • 2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Baking Cocoa
  • 2 Eggs Large, Beaten
  • 1/2 cup Sour Cream

Stir together sugar, flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Combine butter, water and cocoa in saucepan. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Pour into flour mixture. Mix well, using wooden spoon. Blend in eggs and sour cream, mixing well. Pour batter into greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan. Bake in preheated 375 degree F. oven 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan on rack.


  • 1/2 c Butter Or Regular Margarine
  • 6 ts Milk
  • 1/4 c Cocoa; Baking
  • 1 lb Confectioners Sugar
  • 1 ts Vanilla Extract

Combine butter, milk, and cocoa in saucepan. Cook over medium heat until butter is melted and mixture is smooth. Stir in confectioners sugar, that has been sifted. Continue cooking over low heat until confectioners sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Frost cake immediately.

    This cake was great! Chocolate wheat cake is a new style in this house, but it went over awesome. There was something wonderfully magical about the buttery-chocolate flavor it in that it actually got better after every bite!

    This cake sounds really interesting! It’s awesome you have been experimenting with whole wheat. I have to give this a try sometime.
